Before leaving the PCB factory, PCB will pass electrical testing to ensure that the PCB has high performance and high reliability in the final product. Flying probe test is one of the more effective test methods, so what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages:

1. Shorter test development cycles. The system can start production within a few hours after receiving the CAD files, so prototype boards can be tested several hours after assembly.

2. Lower test costs. There is no need to make special test fixtures.

3. Due to the simple and fast of setting, programming and testing, general technical assembly personnel can perform operational testing.

4. Higher test accuracy. The positioning accuracy and repeatability of the online testing of the flying probe, as well as a very small contact and spacing, so that the test system can detect the PCB node that the needle bed fixture cannot achieve.

Disadvantages:

1. As the test probes make physical contact with the solder on the via holes and test pads, small pits may be left in the solder. For some customers, these small pits may be considered as appearance defects and rejected.

2. Loose or poorly soldered component leads may not be detected because the probes sometimes touch component leads where there is no test pad.

3. Flying probe testers require the operator to test one side, then turn it over and test the other side. Therefore, the flying probe test cannot test the top and bottom components of the double-sided PCB at the same time.

To sum up, when we conduct PCB flying probe test, we must carefully consider its advantages and disadvantages to ensure that the test can be successfully completed to ensure the reliability of the PCB.
